PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet printer capable of surely rewriting data such as the residual amount of ink even if using an inexpensive storage element installed in an ink cartridge, and the ink cartridge used for the ink jet printer. SOLUTION: A memory cell 81 of a storage element 80 installed in each of ink cartridges 107K, 107F, is formed such that a second storage area where the ink residual amount of each of the ink cartridges 107K, 107F is rewritten is arranged to be accessed before a first storage area where read only data is stored.
