Successive endwise travelling double-length mouthpieces S are moved laterally by a ramp 14 and projections 18 of a wheel 17 to allow engagement of their rear ends by pushers 21 of a wheel 20 which accelerate the mouthpieces and insert them into spaces between cigarette lengths C on a conveyer 24. The mouthpieces are cut by knives 4 from mouthpiece rods carried in flutes of a drum 1 and are transferred endwise between guides 10 ... 13 by pushers 6 of a chain 5 having a component of motion in the -direction of drum movement. The wheel 17 has cutaways to accommodate the pushers 6 and separating the projections 18 into groups of three or four according as each mouthpiece rod is cut into three or four double-length mouthpieces.
