A method and an apparatus for controlling auto bright in a terminal device are provided to determine where light is incident based on currently located area information and POI information by using location information, time information and POI information received in real time in order to control brightness of a backlight automatically, thereby reducing fatigues of driver's eyes. A terminal device enters an automatic backlight controlling mode(S200). It is determined whether a current driving time is night or not by using GPS(Global Positioning System) receiving information(S202). When the current driving time is night, the terminal device applies bright setting of a night mode default step(S204). The terminal device monitors POI(Point of Interest) information in real time(S208). The terminal device automatically controls brightness by analyzing the collected area information and the POI information(S210).
