The invention provides a wand 100 for an appliance, such as a vacuum cleaner 10 comprising first and second tubes (114, 116, fig 6) and a support mechanism 128. The second tube (116, fig 6) is slideable telescopically within the first tube (114, fig 6) along a common axis (X-X, fig 5). The first and second tubes (114, 116, fig 6) are adapted and arranged to be selectively secured to one another in an extended position or to allow free movement therebetween and the support mechanism 128 is located between overlapping portions of the first and second tubes (114, 116, fig 6). The support mechanism 128 comprises a plurality of tapered portions 140, 150 adapted and arranged to provide support between the first and second tubes (114, 116, fig 6) at separate points along the common axis (X-X. fig 5) of the first and second tubes (114, 116, fig 6). By supporting adjacent tubes (114, 116, fig 6) at a plurality of discrete points along the common axis (X-X, fig 5), the tubes (114, 116, fig 6) are held more firmly with respect to one another, and the maximum allowable play between the tubes (114, 116, fig 6) is reduced. This improves the structural strength of the connection between the tubes (114, 116, fig 6) together with the perceived quality of the wand 100 as a whole. |
