A monocrystalline rod is produced from a polycrystalline rod by fusing a monocrystalline seed of relatively small cross-section to the rod and zone-refining without the use of a crucible. The rod may be of germanium or silicon. The cross-sectional area of the seed may be one-tenth that of the rod.
