A tamper-resistant pattern in association with a hologram is provided on a substrate by preparing a volume (or thick) reflection hologram recorded in a photosensitive recording layer carried by a carrier, printing a pattern 300 on to a gelatine surface of the photosensitive recording layer, and then attaching the hologram to a substrate by adhesive such that the pattern is between the photosensitive recording layer and the substrate to provide a tamper-resistant pattern in association with the hologram. At least two visually distinguishable adhesive types or coloured adhesives may be applied by ink jet printing to form the pattern (400, figure 4), which may be an identification code or serial number. The hologram may contain a biometric image. The substrate may be a passport, banknote, identity card, bond, driving licence or label. |
