a method of treating a biomass by which a substance causing water pollution can be reduced, the generation of an odiferous gas and a global warming gas can be regulated, the nitrogen content of the resultant compost or mulching material for livestock can be lowered and, furthermore, the treatment can be easily conducted at a high temperature within a shorter period of time; a compost and a mulching material for livestock which are produced by the above method; and an agent for treating a biomass. This method of treating a biomass comprises the step of blending a nitrogen-containing biomass with a microorganism belonging to the genus Bacillus and having a denitrification ability and a fermentation promoter capable of promoting the fermentation of the nitrogen-containing biomass by the microorganism belonging to the genus Bacillus.
