An online driver installation system for installing and upgrading a predetermined version of driver and a method thereof are provided to manage the version of the driver to maximize performance of a system by managing diver version information, and install or upgrade the predetermined version of driver to the system by preferentially searching the optimal driver. A driver upgrade server(100) provides a driver file through the network to operate a hardware device, and includes a latest driver information database and an optimal driver information database. The latest driver information database stores a driver name, registration date, a supported OS(Operating System), a driver file path, and a supported hardware type/ID of the latest version. The optimal driver information database stores the driver name, the registration date, the supported OS, the driver file path, and the supported hardware type/ID of the optimal version. A user terminal(300) performs data communication, is connected to a hardware device, and installs optimal driver files corresponding to a driver information list.
