PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which accurately detects the printable area of conveyed paper so as to prevent an image in an area other than the printable area from being formed on a photoreceptor and aligns images on a first side already printed and a second side. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with an area detection sensor 11 detecting the printable area of the paper on a conveying path on the upstream side of the photoreceptor drum 1 in a paper conveying direction. A distance from the area detection sensor 11 to a transfer part is set to be longer than a distance from an image exposure part on the photoreceptor drum 1 to the transfer part.
