In a process for obtaining titanium, zirconium or thorium, the appropriate dioxide is reacted with HF (500-600 DEG F.) and the tetrafluoride distilled off. It is thus reacted with Si under a pressure of at least one atmosphere and at a temperature of 500-800 DEG F., the gaseous SiF4 given off reacting with water to yield HF, the latter being recycled.ALSO:Titanium, zirconium and thorium are obtained by reacting the tetrachloride with silicon and removing the silicon tetrafluoride as a gas. Preferably a pressure of at least one atmosphere and a temperature in the range 500-800 DEG F are used. A cyclic process is disclosed, in which the appropriate dioxide is reacted with HF to give the tetrafluoride and the SiF4 is reacted with water to give SiO2 and HF. The tetrafluoride formed is purified by distillation.
|
