PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive method of a solid-state imaging element capable of reducing leakage of signal charge into a horizontal transfer path from a vertical transfer path, and of improving a frame rate. SOLUTION: Either transfer mode is selected, based on a pixel addition number of an imaging mode, from a first transfer mode in which signal charge from pixels 401 is transferred through the respective vertical transfer paths 402 only in a horizontal blanking period, and a second transfer mode in which signal charge from the pixels 401 is transferred through the respective vertical transfer paths 402 in a period from a horizontal effective scanning period to the subsequent horizontal blanking period.
