PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle periphery monitoring device, a vehicle periphery monitoring method and a program for monitoring vehicle periphery for deciding the classification of an object with high precision by properly extracting the characteristics of another vehicle about an object to be detected from an infrared image obtained by picking up the image of the periphery of a vehicle. SOLUTION: This vehicle periphery monitoring device is provided with a specific object detection means 11 for detecting an object corresponding to an image section having luminance which is a prescribed threshold or more from among infrared images; a first distance calculation means 12 for calculating the distance of the detected specific object to a vehicle 10; a retrieval region setting means 13 for setting an upper region adjacent to the image section of the specific object as a retrieval region; a second distance calculation means 14 for calculating the distance of the position in a real space of the set retrieval region to the vehicle 10; and a specific object classification decision means 15 for deciding the classification of the specific object based on the distance of the specific object to the vehicle 10 and the distance of the retrieval region to the vehicle 10.
