PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of producing a surface metal film material and a method of producing a metal pattern material, which allow the formation of a metal film or a metal pattern high in thermal shock resistance and superior in adhesion to a flat and smooth substrate, by simple and convenient processes. SOLUTION: The method of producing the surface metal film material comprises a process (a1) of forming a polymer layer comprising a polymer which has a functional group mutually acting with a plated catalyst or its precursor and a mesogen group and which is chemically bonded directly to the substrate, a process (a2) of imparting the plated catalyst or its precursor to the polymer layer, a process (a3) of further plating the plated catalyst or its precursor; and the method of producing the metal pattern material comprises a process of etching pattern-likely a metal film prepared by the method of producing the surface metal film material.
