The present invention refers to the preparation of iron oxide nano-particles in a chitosan matrix by precipitation using alkalis in solid state, the resulting materials may be solids ranging from opaque grey to transparent red, having ferromagnetic or super-paramagnetic properties. Besides the aforementioned properties, the chitosan biocompatibility and biodegradability allow the nano-particles to be potentially used in electricity and electronic fields, also having medical and biological applications.
