<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a machine tool having an automatic tool changer for shortening a machining time by reducing the moving distance of each of a tool change unit and a tool spindle during tool replacement. <P>SOLUTION: The tool change unit 13 carries a tool 2 while travelling between a magazine position Pm and a change position Px. The plurality of change positions are set, and one change position is previously selected out of the plurality of change positions, where the tool is to be changed next time.
