In recording-apparatus in which a recording- arm 4, moved in accordance with an electrical variable, presses an ink ribbon 2 against a record strip 1 where they pass over a support 3, the ink ribbon 2 is vibrated in the plane of recording whilst colour transfer is taking place. The ribbon 2 may be driven parallel to the record strip 1 but in the opposite direction or it may be driven transversely to the path of the strip either at right-angles thereto or deviating from the right-angle by a small angle. A motor 8a drives the ribbon winding-on roller 8 and another motor 10, or a pair of such motors, vibrates the whole ribbon feed assembly in a direction transverse to the direction of feed of the ribbon. A protective strip 15 may be fixed between the recording-arm 4 and ribbon 2 to prevent the arm vibrating in sympathy. In another embodiment, Fig. 5, a carbon paper strip 22 is drawn from a supply roll 29 and rewound on a roller 28, after passing round two slim guide rollers 30, 31 connected to a crossbar 32. The bar 32 carries an armature 32a working in two coils 34a, 34b receiving current from an oscillation generator 35. Preferably, the amplitude of vibration should lie between 0.1 and 0.5 mm. and the frequency between 100 and 300 cycles per second.
