The device has a sharpening unit (10) performing sharpening of a blade of a cutter or scissors during oscillating movement, rotation movement and up-and-down movement. The sharpening unit is a cylindrical-shaped pad, which is attached to a bolt or rod (8). An electric motor is used for driving the movements of the sharpening unit, and an upper ring (12) is rotatably fastened to ends in a back-and-forth movable manner. The rod comprises a slotted hole (7) in a rod middle section (3), and the sharpening unit is made of a ceramic material. An independent claim is also included for a method for sharpening a blade of a cutter or scissors.
