PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing metal-coated carbon short fiber by which carbon short fibers are satisfactorily dispersed into a metal plating bath, and electroless plating can be uniformly applied to the surface of the carbon short fiber. SOLUTION: The method for producing metal-coated carbon short fiber is characterized in that the carbon short fibers are electroless-plated in a metal plating bath containing a cross-linking type carboxyvinyl polymer of 10 to 1,000 ppm and/or a nonionic surfactant of 10 to 1,000 ppm whose HLB (hydrophile-lipophile balance) value is≤10, thereby coating the surface of the carbon short fiber with the metal.
