<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a desired exhaust gas temperature and a desired exhaust gas air-fuel ratio without increasing the output of an engine when the rise of an exhaust gas temperature or the rich of an exhaust gas air-fuel ratio according to the state of a NOx trap catalyst is requested. <P>SOLUTION: Using a cylinder control means (intake cut-off valve 6) stopping a part of cylinders by stopping the inflow/outflow of gas and the supply of fuel in each cylinder of an engine 1, the quantity of the stopped cylinders and the outputs of the operating cylinders are determined and controlled according to the request and the output requested from the engine 1 when requested.
