<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To materialize a high contrast display in a projector. <P>SOLUTION: The projector is equipped with: a light source (12) to emit light; a liquid crystal panel (15c) comprising a liquid crystal composed of liquid crystal molecules (51) to which pretilt is imparted with alignment layers along a direction normal to a side (115c) of a first substrate viewed from the direction normal of the first substrate, and which is interposed between a pair of first and second substrates (31, 32) respectively having the alignment layers (43, 98), and modulating light; a pair of polarizing plates (15b, 15d) disposed so as to interpose the liquid crystal panel in between; and a first retardation plate (15a) having negative anisotropy of the refractive index and a first optic axis along a thickness direction as an optic axis, and is disposed between the pair of polarizing plates in the state in which the first optic axis is inclined toward the liquid crystal panel in such a way that the first optic axis is along the long axis of the liquid crystal molecule with the pretilt imparted thereto. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
