PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of filtering an input image to create an output image. SOLUTION: A bilateral filter is composed of a spacial filter and a range filter. The pixel intensities of input images are multiplied by each other to create a set of exponential images approximating the application of the range filter. The spatial filter is applied to the set of the exponential images to obtain an answer, and these answers are combined by each pixel to create the output image filtered bidirectionally.
