The method involves converting free energy into electrical and/or thermal energy, and storing the electrical and/or thermal energy in a vehicle power supply. A request signal (as) is generated for change in a recuperation operating condition of a motor vehicle during activation of a control element e.g. brake pedal or clutch pedal, by a driver, and is changed in the recuperation operating condition. The request signal is generated when the brake pedal is activated about a predetermined brake pedal travel, which is not greater than idle travel of the brake pedal.
