The instant invention comprises a process for selecting and manufacturing antibodies useful for therapeutic, prophylactic, diagnostic or research pur poses using epitope peptide mixtures synthesized by the solid phase synthesi s, such process defined by a set of rules regarding the identity and the fre quency of occurrence of amino acids that substitute a base or native amino a cid of a known epitope. The resulting antibodies are related to but distinct from antibodies that bind to the known epitope.
