PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder capable of stabilizing paper feed performance without regarding the kind and load quantity of a recording medium stored in a tray. SOLUTION: A paper feed roller 10 and an arm 24 move in parallel (as shown by an arrow X) to the recording medium stored in a lower tray 3 corresponding to the kind of the recording medium so that clearance between an inclined wall 17 and the paper feed roller 10 may become the prescribed clearance, and move in parallel (as shown by an arrow Y) to the inclined wall 17 corresponding to the detected consumption quantity of the recording medium without regarding the load quantity of the recording medium stored in the lower tray 3 so that the clearance between the inclined wall 17 and the paper feed roller 10 may be maintained to the prescribed clearance.
