<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a handy cautery which can select a heating capability independently of a cooling capability and is easy to handle. <P>SOLUTION: The cautery includes: a cylindrical container 1 whose front end surface is closed; a contact terminal 6 projecting outward through a front end partition wall of the cylindrical container 1; a heat conduction body 7 which is disposed in contact with a rear end surface of the contact terminal 6 inside the cylindrical container 1 and has a heater 8 embedded; a coolant filled cylinder 11 disposed on the back side of the heat conduction body 7 inside the cylindrical container 1 slidably in the axial direction; a cap 2 for closing the rear end part of the cylindrical container 1; and magnetic force granting means 13 and 14 which brings a front end surface 11c of the filled cylinder 11 into contact with a rear end surface 7b of the heat conducting body 7 when cooling down the contact terminal 6 and separating the front end surface 11c of the filled cylinder 11 from the read end surface of the heat conducting body when heating the same.
