An opioid derivative of oxymorphol, called 8-hydroxy-6-a-oxymorphol, has been discovered. This opioid is believed to bind at least to mu-opioid receptors and produce an analgesic or anti-tussive effect. Pharmaceutically acceptable salts of 8-hydroxy-6-a- oxymorphol, and pharmaceutical compositions comprising 8-hydroxy-6-a-oxymorphol or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof and pharmaceutically acceptable carrier, are also provided.
