CATALYST FOR THE FIRST HYDRODEMETALIZATION STEP IN A HYDROPROCESSING SYSTEM WITH MULTIPLE REACTORS FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF HEAVY AND EXTRA HEAVY CRUDES

The present document concerns an improved catalyst for hydrodemetalization of heavy crudes and residues. The catalyst is used in fixed bed hydroprocessing units. The catalyst is characterized in that it has a large pore diameter for hydrodemetalizing the heavy crude and residue in the first reactor of a multi-reactor process. The catalyst has high demetalization activity and high metal deposition capacity, which results in good stability with respect to time-on-stream (TOS). The hydrorefining catalyst is obtained by mixing a porous material in powder composed principally of gamma alumina, said paste is extruded, the extrudates are dried and calcinated and the properties of said extrudates are: a pore volume of 0.3-0.6 ml_/g or greater and pore diameter of 10 to 26 nm, subsequently active metallic components of the elements which belong to groups VIIIB and VIB of the periodic table are added.
