<p>Provided are a communication system, a transmission device, a reception device, a communication method, and a program capable of performing effective data transmission in an HDMI(R). An HDMI(R) source (53) judges whether an HDMI(R) sink (61) can receive a sub signal according to VSDB of E-EDID. If the HDMI(R) sink (61) can receive the sub signal, transmission pixel data is configured by adding the sub signal to main image pixel data formed by pixel data having a smaller number of bits than the transmission pixel data transmitted from a transmitter (72) and is transmitted by the transmitter (72) via TMDS channel #0 or #2. Moreover, the HDMI(R) source (53) transmits a general control packet including sub signal information expressing whether the transmission pixel data contains a sub signal in the vertical fly-back section control section.
