<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for controlling damage of a sensor due to submergence in an exhaust emission control device for an internal combustion engine. <P>SOLUTION: This device is provided with a microwave generation device 3 generating microwave in an exhaust gas passage 2 of the internal combustion engine 1, the sensor 4 provided at a downstream of the microwave generation device 3, and an exhaust emission control catalyst 5 provided at a downstream of the sensor 4 and purifying exhaust gas.
