PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element wherein polarity inversion driving is possible using a ferroelectric liquid crystal showing a monostable property and showing a half-V shaped switching characteristic. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element having the ferroelectric liquid crystal interposed between a first alignment tratment substrate comprising a first base material, a first electrode layer and a first alignment layer including a rubbing film and a second alignment treatment substrate having a second base material, a second electrode layer and a second alignment layer including first and second alignment patterns, the ferroelectric liquid crystal shows the monostable property and shows the half-V shaped switching characteristic, the first alignment pattern is a pattern comprising an photo-alignment layer containing a photoisomerization type material and the second alignment pattern is a pattern comprising an alignment layer for a reactive liquid crystal and the reactive liquid crystal layer or a pattern comprising an photo-alignment layer containing a photodimerization type material.
