PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photographing device capable of performing focus adjustment with high accuracy with little time lag when performing photography from a live view display state, and a control method for the photographing device. SOLUTION: When a release button 21 is half-depressed in the midst of live view display on a liquid crystal monitor 26, contrast AF is performed with first focusing accuracy. When an enlargement button 34 is operated, the live view display is performed in an enlarged state, and also the contrast AF is performed with second focusing accuracy higher than the first focusing accuracy, whereby second focusing display is performed. When the release button 21 is fully depressed in such a state that the second focusing display is performed (#107 and #113), photographing operation (#125) is performed without performing phase difference AF control (#121).
