An automatic toll receiving system comprises an imaging section for imaging a vehicle entering a travel lane of a tollgate, a reading section for reading vehicle type information and license plate information from a recording medium provided from the vehicle traveling along the traveling lane, a checking section for extracting information on the license plate from the image and checking the information with the license information, and a calculating section for calculating the toll by using the vehicle type information when the information agree with the vehicle type, the person in charge of the tollgate is required to input the vehicle type information when the information disagree. With such a system, a simple facility enables prevention of misjudgment of the vehicle type.
