<PICT:0898240/IV (b)/1> In the pyrolysis of hydrocarbons to form acetylene by contact with hot combustion gases, the latter are obtained in a combustion chamber into which are introduced gaseous streams of fuel and comburent, one of which is introduced parallel to the axis of the chamber and the other such that the two streams impinge at an angle of 10 degrees-60 degrees. Preferably oxygen or air is introduced by inlet 20 and fuel gas by a series of inlets or a continuous annular inlet 22 to form a flame 25. Steam is introduced by inlets or annular slit 26 to protect the chamber walls. Hydrocarbon is introduced by holes or slit 32 fed by inlet 30 and pyrolysed in chamber 40 down the walls of which water flows from pipe 42. The gases are quenched by water injected through holes 48. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 3 not shown) a number of burners are arranged in a circle at the head of a larger combustion chamber.
