Column "head" pressure potential energy of liquid, where the condenser is significantly higher than the expansion valve, is usefully converted by turbine (2) powering variable speed generator (3). Because of heat input from hermetic turbine (2)/generator (3) efficiency losses liquid (1) is sub-cooled by DX heat exchanger (13) to prevent flash-off. Liquid flash-off is inhibited by controlling turbine-generator (2-3), or DX sub-cooling via inputs from temperature and pressure sensors (4 and 5) that, via computer software, sense the approach of a vapour condition. Similarly, refrigerated liquid from a condenser to a same level evaporator can be turbine-generator pressure reduced such that liquid is supplied, without a TEV, to the evaporator - recovering energy otherwise lost by a TEV. Such systems can also be configured to generate renewable power only; with condensers and evaporators Summer/Winter reversibly exchanging heat with each other, as applicable to tall/very tall buildings, disused/ "new" mines and topographical separation (e.g. California to Colorado). |
