A safety barrier comprises in combination a trough 2 which is open along the full length of its upper side, a plurality of bars 3 to 12 pivotally attached at one end at 2a within and to the lower trough, an upper rail 1 having a central longitudinal partition 13 forming two parallel channels along the full length of the upper rail on its lower side, sliding insert rails 20, 21 in each of the channels in the upper rail, half of the bars being pivotally attached at their upper ends to one of the sliding insert rails 20 and the other half of the bars being pivotally attached at their upper ends to the other of the sliding insert rails 21. The barrier may be locked in its open position (Fig. 1) or in a closed position (Fig. 3). The barrier may be clamped to a bed frame such as 27 (Fig. 11), the trough 2 being received in a bracket 28. Alternatively, as shown in Fig. 12, the trough 2 may be provided with a lug 30 which may be fixed in a notched bar 31 on a bed frame 32. In a modification, shown in Fig. 14, the lower rail 2 of the barrier is attached to a plate 39 which is fixed by means of a bracket 40 to a bed rail. One of the bars 12 of the barrier has an extension 12a which may be locked in a vertical position by means of a lever 41 so that the barrier is locked in the open position. |
