A contents recording device and method are provided to set optimum configuration information automatically in consideration of the system information of an apparatus reproducing recorded contents, thereby offering the user optimum video/audio play quality. A contents recording device comprises a configuration information storage(34) storing the configuration information of one or more content reproducing apparatuses, and a configuration information administration unit(31) setting up the configuration information of the contents recording device by referring to the configuration information of the content reproducing apparatus stored in the configuration information storage. The configuration information administration unit includes a configuration information comparison unit(311) for comparing the configuration information of the reproducing apparatus with that of the recording device, and a configuration information extracting unit(313) for extracting the configuration information of one reproducing apparatus from the configuration information storage.
