[Also in Group I] A machine for cutting material, e.g. tea or tobacco, comprises one or more curved cutting members 1, 2, having one dimension parallel to the axis of a nozzle 19 for feeding the material and a curved cutting edge formed by a bevelled face 112 which is part of a conical surface whose apex lies in said axis, the shape and mounting of the or each cutting edge being such that during one revolution thereof the cutting edge traverses the entire cross-section of the nozzle end effecting a cut which commences at one side or corner of the nozzle end and moves to the opposite side or corner. As shown, tobacco is fed by synchronously-driven belts 53 to the nozzle 19 beneath which is a shoot 23 for cut tobacco. A truncated conical cutter head with an apex angleαconsists of two parts 13 and 14 keyed to a shaft 10 inclined at an angle ofα/2 degrees to nozzle 19, and mounted in bearings. Displaceably mounted on shaft 10 above parts 13, 14, is a disc 5 with two downwardly-extending parts 6 having grooves in which cutters 1, 2 are secured by studs 29. The cutters are housed in parts 3 connected to a lid 4 keyed to the shaft 10. Rods 8 fixed to disc 5 extend outwardly through holes in lid 4 and are connected to a slide 56, 57 movable along shaft 10 and engaged by a setting member 35 of a guide member 47. Member 47 is displaceable along a guide 46 on operation of a hand wheel 56<SP>1</SP> which rotates a spindle 57<SP>1</SP> carrying a nut 48 connected to member 47. A grinding disc 36 mounted on the shaft of an electric motor 37 mounted for adjustment perpendicular to a supporting shaft 31 parallel to the supporting surface of the drum by guide means 38, 39 and parallel to the supporting surface of the drum by guide means 32, 33. The grinding device is reciprocated through gear mechanism by a rod 30. In modifications, three cutters may be mounted eccentrically on shaft or there may be one cutter in the form of a spiral.</p> |
