The seat (1) has a safety element associated with a seat surface (3) and an adjustment device (5) that interacts with the safety element (4) that moves it from a reclining position to a safety position in the event of a crash and for restoring the safety element from the safety position into the reclining position. The safety element acts on the seat surface in the safety position to counter forward displacement of the occupant's (2) pelvis in the longitudinal direction (X) of the seat. The displacement device is provided and designed to move the safety element into at least one intermediate position between the safety and reclining positions. An independent claim is also included for a method of controlling an inventive device.
