Generating a signal which corresponds to the degree of opening of the vocal folds of the larynx

A method for generating a signal corresponding to the degree of opening of the vocal folds 2 of the larynx, in which the vocal folds 2 are illuminated with near-infrared light from a light source 1. The light source 1 produces a signal modulated by the movement of the vocal folds 2, which is displayed and/or recorded by a sensor 6 and evaluation unit 9. Visible light from a stroboscopic source 7 containing little or no infrared light is used simultaneously to observe the vocal folds 2 with an endoscope 3. A mirror 5 couples out any infrared light from the light from light source 7 and this parasitic IR signal is received by sensor 10. The output signal of sensor 10 is used to compensate the output signal of sensor 6.
