A method and an apparatus for providing user authentication function in portable communication system are provided to improve the security by using the authentication information mapped with the image. When the authentication code is generated, the controller(100) performs the control action such that the authentication code management part(102) produces the authentication code to the authentication area of image used for the authentication procedure. When the authentication procedure is performed, the controller selects the authentication area corresponding to the authentication code generated at the portable terminal user. The authentication code management part compares the selected authentication area with the authentication area corresponding to the predetermined authentication code and performs the control action in order to judge whether the authentication procedure is succeed or not. The authentication code management part receives the instruction of the controller, maps the authentication code to the authentication area used for the authentication code in the image and produces the authentication code. The authentication code management part compares the authentication area of image selected from the portable terminal user with the authentication area predetermined authentication code and performs the authentication procedure.
