Means for mounting or dismounting a bearing having an inner rotatable sleeve 20 and a non- rotating chock 26 on the roll neck 4 of a roll 2 in which the roll neck has an axial extension 10, 12, 14 comprises a threaded ring 68 removably positioned on said extension, removable means securing said ring to said extension, a nut 70 on said ring, means acting in compression or tension between said sleeve and nut whereby on rotation of said nut in one direction the sleeve is forced on to said roll neck and when rotated in the opposite direction the sleeve is forced from said roll neck, said threaded ring, nut, sleeve, chock and associated means being removable as a unit from said roll neck and extension. Keyed to the sleeve 20 is a sleeve ring 34 slidably mounted on the extension 10 of the roll neck and its outer end abuts and is keyed to the inner race 40 of a thrust bearing 42 having two separate outer races 50 and 52 and a plurality of rollers 54. The sleeve 20 and thrust bearing 42 are enclosed in a watertight structure comprising the chock 26 and end plates 62 and 66. The nut 70 has an inner abutment 72 adapted to engage the outer end of race 40 and an outwardly extending flange 74. A clamp ring 78, Fig. 5, located in a groove 18 in the extension 14 limits movement of the threaded ring 68. A key 92 on the clamp ring engages in a keyway 102 in the threaded ring 68 which is in alignment with a keyway 104 in the extension 12. When threaded ring 68 has been backed off to the position shown in Fig. 1 by rotation of the nut 70 which engages the inner race 40, the outer end of the threaded ring 68 engages a notch 98 in clamp ring 78 so that further rotation of the nut provides a compressive force acting through the inner race 40, sleeve ring 34 and flange 36 to force the sleeve 20 on to the roll neck. Conversely if the nut is rotated in the opposite direction the flange 74 engages a flange 76 on the end plate 66 and the threaded ring 68 moves until it abuts a shoulder 16 on the extension 10. Thereafter as the nut is further rotated tension forces are set up on the end plates 66 and 62 and the chock 26 causing a flange 48 on a bushing 28 to engage a flange 46 on the sleeve 20. Further rotation of the nut causes the nut to move axially and thus withdraw the sleeve 20 from its force fit position on the roll neck. Finally, the clamping ring 78 is removed and the entire bearing structure is slid off the roll neck. The nut is rotated by means of a cable attached to one of three circumferentially spaced pins 112, Fig. 3, and then wrapped around the nut, the other end of the cable being connected to the hoist of a crane so that as the cable is raised the weight of the roll assembly compels the nut to rotate. The nut 7 is locked during operation of the roll by a circular check nut 116 attached to the nut 70 by a plurality of screws 118. Specifications 398,332 and 720,745 are referred to.
