A gluing machine for gluing together a first element of sheet material and a second element of sheet material to produce an assembled unit comprising two hoppers for separately holding separate stacks of said elements and a hopper for holding said assembled units, two element feeders for feeding one element from each of said element hoppers to positions in which said two elements are in overlapping relation, a glue applicator for applying glue to an area on one of two said elements so fed, which area faces and is overlapped by the other of said two elements when they arrive in said positions, a plunger adapted to engage said two elements while moving in a direction normal to the planes of said two elements to bring said elements into face-to-face overlapping contact, with said glue between said elements, to form one of said units, and to move said unit so formed into a receiving end of said unit hopper, a device for applying pressure to said unit for yieldably resisting its movement into said unit hopper whereby the two elements constituting said unit are firmly glued together, and a unit retaining device at the receiving end of said unit hopper adapted to yield to allow a unit to be thus delivered into the unit hopper by the plunger but to prevent said unit moving reversely with said plunger out of the hopper during the withdrawal stroke of the plunger. Fig. 1 shows a front elevation and Figs. 4 and 5 show vertical section views of a gluing machine according to the invention with the moving parts (in Figs. 4 and 5) in positions corresponding to two successive phases of a cycle of operation. The machine is adapted to produce a bag closure assembly 24 (Fig. 18) comprising two elements i.e. a closure device 19 and a card label 23 glued together. Closure elements 19 are fed from supply hopper 161 by reciprocating feeder 303 past rotary glue applicator 137 on to platform 295 supported on plunger 290. Card elements 23 are fed from supply hopper 162 by reciprocating feeder 304 on to platform 295, the platform being so shaped that the left-hand end of element 23 overlaps the right-hand end of element 19. Plunger 290 then rises, forcing the assembled units 24 upwards, on platform 295, into hopper 163 past a unit retaining device comprising spring-operated dog heads 256 (Fig. 5). Weight 271 (Figs. 1 and 15, the latter being a horizontal sectional view on line 15-15 in Fig. 1) operating through arm 272 presses downwardly on units 24 in hopper 163, yieldably resisting the movement of fresh units into the hopper urged upwardly by platforms 295 and plunger 290 and ensuring the firm gluing together of the units in the hopper. Upon the subsequent descent of plunger 290 and platform 295 the units 24 are supported from beneath and retained in the hopper 163 by the dog heads 256. |
