A magnetic recording disk and a disk drive with patterned phase-type servo fields for positioning a read/write head are provided to increase the disk space for data by removing two fields. A magnetic recording disk with patterned phase-type servo fields for positioning a read/write head comprises a recording layer made of magnetization material for recording data in a plurality of concentric circular data tracks, and a plurality of non-data servo sectors(120) extended in the radial direction on the data tracks. The servo sector includes at least two fields of magnetization stripes which are oriented in the radial direction, wherein each stripe includes a plurality of islands forming zigzag pattern, the alternating stripes within each field in the track direction are magnetized in a first direction and the stripes between the alternating stripes within each field are magnetized in a second direction approximately anti-parallel to the first direction.
