The cleaning element (4) has a holding plate for holding several water-absorbing strips (43). The strips comprise a large water-absorbing surface made of front, rear, left and right surfaces, for wiping a large floor area. Several reinforcing seams (5) are provided longitudinally along the strips, respectively, to provide mechanical strength to the cleaning element. An independent claim is included for cleaning apparatus.
