PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out stable back pressure control by improving accuracy of judging a storage amount of liquid in a liquid chamber. SOLUTION: The liquid ejection apparatus includes: a sub tank having the liquid chamber which stores the liquid, a gas chamber which is filled with gas and a flexible membrane which divides the liquid chamber from the gas chamber; a liquid tank which is connected to the liquid chamber and stores the liquid; a liquid conveyance means which conveys the liquid between the liquid chamber and the liquid tank; an ejection head connected to the liquid chamber; a control means which carries out the back pressure control of the liquid in the ejection head by controlling pressure in the gas chamber; a liquid pressure detection means which detects pressure in the liquid chamber; a gas pressure detection means which detects the pressure in the gas chamber; and a liquid storage amount-determining means which determines whether or not an amount of the liquid stored in the liquid chamber is within a tolerable range in which the back pressure control can be carried out, according to a gas-liquid pressure differential which is a difference between the pressure of the liquid chamber detected by the liquid pressure detection means and the pressure of the gas chamber detected by the gas pressure detection means.
