PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain optimal and highly accurate character edge identification on a halftone dot by providing a first character edge identification means for identifying a character edge existing on high density halftone dot brackground and a second character edge identification means for identifying a character edge existing on low density halftone dot background, and identifying the character edges using different features. SOLUTION: The first character edge identification means 2001 identifies the character edge on a high density halftone dot from the respective signals of CMY signals. The second character edge identification means 2002 identifies the character edge on a low density halftone dot from the respective signals of the CMY signals. The OR operation is performed by an OR2003 to identify the character edge on the high density halftone dot or the character edge on the low density halftone dot as the character edge.
