PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a wire whose material is made of a hard-to-work steel. SOLUTION: This production method comprises: a stage (1) where a billet is rolled, so as to obtain a linear base material 26 whose material is made of a hard-to-work steel; and a stage (2) where the base material 26 is subjected to shaping by a die 24 whose surface has a coating layer essentially consisting of titanium nitride. The hard-to-work steel is a steel comprising≥7 mass% Ni. In this production method, the working speed for the base material 26 subjected to the shaping is preferably 100 to 120 m/min. The coating layer 34 has high hardness. The die can subject the base material 26 whose material is made of a hard-to-work steel to shaping. In this shaping, chippings and cracks are not generated, flaws are not formed on the surface of the wire 28 obtained by the shaping of the base material 26.
