<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel nitrilase exhibiting excellent optical selectivity and wide substrate specificity in the synthetic reaction of carboxylic acids, for example, optically active hydroxycarboxylic acids from a mixture of nitrile compounds and/or aldehyde compounds with cyano compounds. <P>SOLUTION: Provided is a nitrilase having the following physicochemical characteristics: (i) molecular weight: measured value by gel filtration method 450KDa; and measured value by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis 38KDa; (ii) optimal temperature: 40-45°C; and (iii) optimal pH: 7.5-9.0.
