A method of sending data between heterogeneous nodes. The method includes a step of inserting a type indicator into a message (RE(1), I(1)) sent by a user agent in one of said nodes before setting up a communications session between said nodes, said type indicator representing the type of address associated with said user agent (A). The method quickly identifies risks of incompatibility between the types of two user agents (A, B) seeking to communicate with each other, with a view to resolving such incompatibilities if necessary. Application to intercommunication of IPv4, IPv6 or Dual Stack (DS) user agents in IP networks.
