PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical material having a high refractive index while ensuring excellent transparency by using fine particles of a metal oxide, and to provide an ophthalmic lens having excellent transparency and a high refractive index, such as a contact lens and an intraocular lens by using such an optical material. SOLUTION: The optical material comprises a polymer obtained by polymerizing a monomer composition, prepared by finely dispersing fine particles of a metal oxide surface-modified with a silane coupling agent in one or more monomers having a polymerizable unsaturated bond, while maintaining the dispersed state of the metal oxide.
